Two heads lean together over bands of pale blue, grey and beige. One face is pale, a blue eye half open. The other sinks into shadow inside a blue ring, only its ear lit pink. Ribbons of combed paint pour from where they meet.

The faces do not sit side by side. They cross. The lit one watches, the shadowed one listens, and each lacks what the other holds. Red hairline cracks run through both, one older drawing laid across two heads. At the shared mouth, a third face forms that no habit of portraiture would have produced.

The gaze will not hold both faces at once. It takes the open blue eye, then the pink ear, and the other face slips back. Neither ever earns the right to be first.
