A face fills the frame from brow to jaw, close enough that skin reads as planed wood — grey-green, cross-hatched with fine vertical striations, the grain of a surface that has been worked and re-worked. One eye holds its colour: blue-grey iris, precise, open. From the inner corner, gold drips — not gilt, not light, but a viscous mineral trail running down the cheek across the grain of the face. The eye is the only element that remains biological. Everything surrounding it — skin, brow, cheek, the partial hand visible at the right edge — has crossed into material: stone, panel, patinated ground. The gold does not ornament the face; it moves through it as through a surface already accustomed to slow loss. The image holds the eye and the drip in the same frame without explaining the distance between them.
