A figure with a bowed head, eyes lowered, hair black against a flat linen-coloured ground. Across the face, pale cracked sheets fold back like torn plaster or parchment. The living cheek and mouth show through the opening. The left ear stays untouched, pink and exact.
The face was drawn by hand long before it was an image. Where the pull toward a smooth, recognisable someone should have closed it, the surface refused and began to peel. What came back is a third state: skin that behaves as cloth, and cloth that behaves as skin. The scarf at the shoulder carries the same red and blue streaks.
The eye settles on the opening at the cheek. What lies under the peeled surface changes each time it is found, and the face never fully closes over it.
