A figure walks bent forward in profile, head bald and bowed, arms folded over the chest. Behind the shoulders a blue wing of feathers and ribs streams to the right. Torn cream cloth hangs from the hips. Red and black ruled lines cross it all.
The head is smooth, the ribs bare, the skirt torn paper and earth. Each was reached by a different means. The ruled lines are where those means meet and argue: they pass through flesh, bone and feather alike, measuring a body that has no name in any anatomy book.
Someone who keeps it gives up the wish for a body that can be read from its outline. This one has to be known region by region, and the lines do not promise that the regions will add up.
