Two figures press toward one another at the center of the image, mouths nearly meeting, hands rising to hold or restrain. A vertical seam divides the composition: left, warm flesh tones and fine scoring lines mapping the body like cartography; right, a dark mineral mass — slate, iron, compressed cloud — that has replaced the second head entirely. Orange breaks through at the crown and lower edge, less pigment than heat. The line work running across both figures operates independently of them — a scaffolding drawn before or after, indifferent to anatomy. Where the two bodies meet, material states are incompatible: one is skin under tension, the other is matter that no longer performs as flesh. Janus looked forward and back simultaneously; here the two directions have pressed into the same point and cannot separate.
