A figure in three-quarter profile, suited, collared, precise. The head is smooth and pale — closer to carved ivory than flesh. From the brow upward, the skull extends into a broad, sweeping form: part brim, part membrane, a single continuous surface that replaces the upper face entirely. Eyes, forehead, hairline — all subsumed beneath a band of luminous matter that curves into the dark ground behind. Light falls from the upper left and follows the sweep of that structure, pooling where the nose and mouth remain just legible. Below the collar, everything is formal, composed, readable. Above it, recognition stalls. The image offers the architecture of a portrait — posture, dress, scale — then withdraws the one thing a portrait is supposed to deliver.
