A figure tilts back, chin raised, throat exposed, eyes closed. Below the jaw the body darkens — dense, layered, paint worked into mass: deep blacks bruised with burgundy and teal, matter that has thickened and set. From the skull, warm vapour lifts in orange and rose, bleeding into the pale ground above. The image divides at the line where the face ends and the smoke begins, two states of the same substance held in the same frame. The lower body is fixed, compressed, carrying weight. The upper disperses — not into light, but into something still material, still warm. Neither state resolves the other. What the body is becoming remains, precisely, undecided.
