A man hangs upside down in a tall dark-blue panel, chest and belly above, face below. The torso is deep green and blue, the face warm brown, eyes open, lips parted. Thin ruled lines cut the panel into squares. Peeling cream and sage paint frames each side.
The torso was built from dark glazes, the face from thick warm paint, and the same squares run over both. The grid is a measure laid on a body whose parts were reached by different means. At the brow, the nipple and the damp strip along the bottom edge, those means bargain with one another. Nothing in the picture says what kind of body this is, and the squares do not try to.
The ruled lines stay put in every light the room offers. Hung low, the face sits at standing height. What you know of the man comes in squares, one after another, never as a single outline.
